Abstract

The laboratory of chip security analysis will serve for educational purposes that combine software and hardware approach to security. The topics will cover possible attacks in form of eavesdropping, side channel analysis (e.g. in chip cards) and especially direct hardware analysis of the chips.

The laboratory will provide one workplace that will server, besides other activities, for preparation of e-learning materials (such as instruction videos, database of uncased chips etc.). These will be used during lectures but more importantly for hand-on activities and realization of projects in IT security courses. In the laboratory, there is Olympus BX61M optical microscope that is being used for basic technical analysis of chips. However, it has already reached its technical limits. The demand for analysis of more sophisticated chips cannot be fulfilled due to the physical limitations of this optical device. We are not able to recognize basic blocks of a chip even with the maximal zoom. An extension by better lenses has not been recommended by the vendor. Hence, we would like to get a new device (PHENOM G2 PURE electron microscope) that pushes the boundaries of possible observations and enables the examination of the contemporary integrated circuits. Form educational point of view, it is desirable to allow students to observe modern technologies practically. The laboratory will serve for education in following courses: Information System Security (BIS), Information System Security and Cryptography (BID), Cryptography (KRY), Intelligent Sensors (SEN), Advanced Assembly Languages (IPA) and Digital Systems Design (INC). Additionally, it will serve for bachelor's and master's research projects. A part of the project will be also development of software that will support analysis of image data acquired by the microscope.
