facial deepfakes, speech deepfakes, deepfake detection, computer security
Deepfake technology is on the rise, and many techniques and tools for deepfake creation are being developed and publicly released. The quality of these tools is progressively growing. This wave of new-generation deepfakes brings new opportunities for innovators and bad actors. The naturalness and lack of distinctive artifacts of the latest deepfakes make them highly believable, and very difficult to differentiate between what is real and what is fake. Both machines and humans struggle to identify deepfakes. This article discusses how deepfakes are created and what types of deepfakes exist. We provide an overview of beneficial and malicious deepfake usages with real-world examples and reports. Finally, we discuss deepfake detection and provide tips on how people can spot deepfakes in the wild.
