Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is one of the major technologies utilised in wearables and other consumer-oriented Internet of Things (IoT) devices. With the rise of IoT devices in personal and home environments, the risk of BLE devices being misused has increased. Because monitoring of Bluetooth devices is non-trivial task, this paper's goal is to propose a form of security monitoring for BLE devices.
We developed a proof-of-concept connection detector and verified the feasibility of our idea on several test devices with different behaviours. The detector shows promising results even when used with a standard Bluetooth chip and proves it is possible to monitor the usage of any BLE device in range indirectly.
