This paper deals with the abilities of Eclipse to serve as a modular, graphical environment for heterogeneous modelling. The main focus lies on the application of XML technology in the area of modelling -- especially combined and heterogeneous modelling. Our investigation in this field has led into the project Japetus. Eclipse is a general and modular environment written in Java. Project Japetus is a plug-in for Eclipse. It offers the ability of visual design of continuous, discrete, and also combined and heterogeneous models.
