Ensuring integrity and availability of information resources and safeguarding personal information and institutional assets have become essential responsibilities in any modern information system. And in these days of heightened security, identity management is becoming more important part of the security chain. Properly identifying users of your systems, whether they are within your organization or external, is key to protecting your data and business. Identity management is a broad administrative area that deals with identifying individuals in a system and controlling their access to resources within that system by associating user rights and restrictions with the established identity. Identity management is a complex issue: it consists of technology, policies and administrative procedures. This article and presentation will draw together the technology building blocks, policy, and standards needed to understand the identity management problematics.
