Processor architecture underwent such an explosive growth in recent years as hardly any other discipline. In this first part of the e-book the development of of general-purpose microprocessors for PCs, enterprise servers as well as for parallel supercomputers is traced. Beside advanced silicon technology and growth inclock frequency, just changes in processor architecture were what contributed to enormous increase in performance of these microprocessors by making use bit-, instruction-, data-, thread-, and finaly core-level paralelism.
