Architecture of the 20th Century

The series of lectures consists of main streams and movements, theories, representatives and works of the world architecture since the 1960s, when both systematic criticism and creative reaction to the inter-war international style of functionalism began to emerge. All the tendencies of the late 20th century will be characterized - post-modernism, the continuation of modernism, high-tech, deconstructivism etc.

Learning objectives

The series of lectures provides students with the orientation in the complex issues of the relationship between architecture and fine arts since the 1920s.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Chapters on architecture based on the tuition of art-history on the bachelor level.

Syllabus of lectures

Comparison of the representatives of the inter-war functionalism with their critics who gave birth to postmodernism in the 1960s. Replacement of ideological and artistic dogmas of modernism with postmodernist plurality expressed in deconstructivism, high-tech etc.

Progress assessment

Study evaluation is based on marks obtained for specified items. Minimimum number of marks to pass is 50.

Controlled instruction

Written composition with visual support, focusing on the relevant style, art-form, movement, personality etc. from the area of the world or Czech architecture from the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.
