Scientific Publishing A to Z

The hybrid course "Scientific publishing A to Z" guide students through the process of creating (and promoting) a scholarly text. In the first chapters, the course focuses on motivation in scientific career,  electronic resource selection (and later in the course also on their correct use, incl. citing) and choosing a suitable journal for publishing or a conference for presenting the research. The following chapters provide the overview of the scholarly text creation process and discuss possibilities of research stays abroad and international cooperation. In the last chapters, the course focuses on the dissemination of the results of the scientific work, citation analysis, and several minor aspects of career in sciences.

The course is intended for PhD students. It is optional (thus it is outside the required plan for students).

Learning objectives

To present how academic life and career work, what fuels a researcher

To understand the process of research presentation - the process of article publishing and conference presentation

To consider research stays and international cooperation

To understand copyright and necessity of correct citing in research

 


The student will know the basic sources of scientific information from pre-paid databases at BUT as well as freely available information sources and patent databases. They will be able to cite the literature correctly. They will be familiar with the basic principles of creating a scientific text and basics of the publishing process. They will be able to find a suitable journal for publishing the text and in relation to science evaluation criteria in the Czech Republic. They will know the basic possibilities to promote the results of the scientific work and will be able to perform citation analysis of the publishing results.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of working with PC and Internet.

The course is taught in the form of on-site seminars, supported with e-learning (LMS Moodle) and individual consultations. The base of the course is assignments and the feedback to them.

Exam prerequisites

To pass the course successfully, it is necessary to pass the assigned tasks in individual chapters for at least 50%.
