Learning objectives

The course has been set up to teach (as a part of the required knowledge in electrical engineering) the principles of safe design, realization, and operation of electrical installation and devices. The instruction will be directed towards preparing the students to take the examination based on ordinance no. 250/2022 Coll. and subsequent Government Regulation No. 194/2022 Coll., On professional qualifications in electrical engineering. After passing the exam, the students will be qualified to work independently in the field of electrical engineering.

The course is not intended for first-year students bachelor students!

Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to perform the following tasks:
- evaluate the risks and avoid any danger posed by electricity,
- interpret the legal or technical regulations and standards related to the given discipline,
- explain the dangers of electricity to persons not familiar with this province,
- instruct persons intending to operate an electrical apparatus,
- apply first aid in case of electric shock.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Students wishing to enroll in the course are expected to be capable of applying Kirchhoff’s and Ohm’s laws to single-phase and three-phase circuits.

Syllabus of lectures

1. Legal regulations, technical standards, and qualifications in electrical engineering: the Czech Republic and other European countries, electrical apparatuses and networks.
2. Electric shock in rooms and spaces, shielding and protection of powered objects, safe electrical products and installations, connection of electrical appliances.
3. Impact of the electric current on the human organism, protection against electric shock.
4. Protective equipment, assessment of operational risks, standardized safety signs and instructions; communicators and controllers, safe handling and operation of an electrical apparatus.
5. Fire safety of electrical devices.
6. In-class test.
7. Immediate first aid and resuscitation practice using a dummy.
8. Protection of electrical and electronic devices against lightning and overvoltage.
9. Summary of issues for examination before the interview.
10. Final test.
11. Interview.
12. Interview.
13. Interview.

Progress assessment

The evaluation of the subject is based on two written tests: 0 - 40 points from the control test and 0 - 60 points from the final test. Upon obtaining 80% of the possible points from each test, the student can optionally take an oral exam in front of the committee to obtain a Certificate of professional qualifications in electrical engineering according to § 6 of Government Regulation No. 194/2022 Coll. are considered highly qualified for independent operation and maintenance of a LV electrical apparatus (up to 1000 V alternating voltage or 1.5 kV direct voltage in buildings without explosion hazard).

Students wishing to be awarded the Certificate of professional qualifications in electrical engineering (after an examination in front of a committee), are required to attend the 5 lectures, according to the schedule. In case of non-participation or inconvenient date of the lecture, it is possible to attend the lecture on the second date. Different topics will take place in one week (e.g. topic A on Tue and topic B on Thu).
