French for pre-intermediate

XPC-FR4 FEKT XPC-FR4 Acad. year 2024/2025 Summer semester 3 credits

The course will focus on developing communication skills, including pronunciation, oral interaction, listening, reading, and writing, as well as French grammar and vocabulary. The materials used for this course will be selected from Lessons 9-23 of Inspire 2 textbook.

The following topics will be studied in this course:

Grammar: the imperfect (l´imparfait) in contrast to the passé composé; the use of the pronoun "en"; pronouns used as the indirect object (COI); prepositions with geographical names, comparisons (adjectives, verbs, quantities); the subjunctive; the expression of duty; the expression of advice with "si"; the expression of cause and effect;

Vocabulary: city life; chores; projects/start-ups; sports; materials; shopping and consumption; climate and natural disasters

Learning objectives

The course is primarily intended for students who have successfully completed XPC-FR3. Its aim is to enhance the linguistic competences already acquired and expand the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary to the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This will provide students with adequate linguistic resources to handle common communication situations when travelling, studying or working.

The student will have a good command of grammatical structures and vocabulary at the A2 level and will be able to comprehend and respond appropriately to the most common phrases used by French speakers. Course participants will be able to read short, simple texts and locate specific information within them (menus, brochures, advertisements, and short articles).

 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

It is recommended that you have completed XPC-FR3  or have a corresponding level of knowledge.

 

Progress assessment

The written end-of-course test covers the vocabulary and grammar taught during the semester. To pass the test, a minimum score of 50% is required.

Students must actively participate in at least 75% of the seminars, with a maximum of three absences.
