Subject specific learning outcomes and competences
Overview of LANs and practical skill with cabling. Configuration of routers and switches. Network troubleshooting: physical, link, and network layers. Overview and selection of routing protocols. Configuring a router. The contents of the course corresponds to CCNA 1 and a part of CCNA 2 courses.
Learning objectives
Students gain practical skills with switch configuration, Ethernet technology virtual LANs (VLANs). The course also deals with IP addressing, routing, basic configuration of routers, routing protocol RIP. The content of the course covers CCNA 1 (Introduction to Networks) and partially CCNA 2 (Switching, Routing, and Wireless Essentials).
Why is the course taught
By completing the course you will acquire the practical knowledge of computer networks. You will understand the principles of computer communication, and you will also learn how to set up different network devices and troubleshoot network configuration.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Binary-hexadecimal-decimal conversion. Operating systems Unix and Windows. Ability to study standards and literature in English.

Progress assessment
- Active laboratory work (max. 60 points).
- Practical skills tests (max. 40 points).
- Optionally, each student can obtain CCNA1 Cisco Networking Academy Certificate of Completion all tests including Final exam and Skill test must be passed with min. score 80%.
Controlled instruction
- Active laboratory work - 11 laboratories, one 2 points, others 6 points each.
- Alternative laboratories substituing an absence at laboratories during illness possible with teacher's agreement only.
Exam prerequisites
- Labs attendance, minimal number of points required.
- Getting at least 50% points.
